Background

Twin Rivers Unified School District, serving over 25,000 students in North Sacramento, began exploring MagicSchool’s AI for teachers after learning about it at conferences and through instructional technology networks.

According to Kelly Bettencourt, Coordinator, Instructional Technology, the district began with a small pilot program, inviting a group of enthusiastic, tech-forward teachers to explore the tools and provide feedback. The success of this pilot quickly led to a full district license.

From the start, two tools stood out: Raina, the AI instructional coach that offers personalized, real-time guidance, and the Report Card Comment Generator, which quickly became a key time-saver during grading periods.

Challenges

Before implementing MagicSchool, Twin Rivers teachers were overwhelmed by lesson planning, grading, and providing individualized feedback, leaving little time for meaningful instruction or student relationships.

At the same time, district leaders needed tools that could ease teacher workload while protecting curriculum fidelity and aligning with California’s new AI requirements under AB 2876. Without a trusted, educator-centered solution, adoption risked stalling.

The moment I realized we needed to make a change was when I noticed how much time teachers were spending after school just to stay afloat.

Solutions: AI for teachers

Twin Rivers USD approached implementation strategically, combining rollout tactics with classroom tools that delivered measurable impact:

  • Pilot to scale: A small group of enthusiastic teachers piloted MagicSchool and shared their success. Their results built trust and created demand, laying the foundation for district-wide adoption.
  • Curriculum-aligned tools: Lesson planners, differentiation supports, and feedback generators ensured resources met California standards and AB 2876. These tools gave leaders confidence in compliance and scalability while strengthening instructional quality.
  • Raina (AI Instructional Coach): Provided teachers with on-demand guidance for lesson planning and differentiation. One teacher shared that she created a full week of differentiated lessons in under an hour instead of several evenings.
  • Report Card Comment Generator: Simplified grading periods by helping teachers generate high-quality, individualized comments quickly, easing workload and stress during one of the busiest times of year.

Together, these solutions have driven a district-wide shift. Teachers are saving valuable time each week, morale has improved, and adoption continues to accelerate across classrooms. As Kelly explains,

“MagicSchool has sparked new conversations about instructional strategies and created a sense of shared innovation among our teachers.”

MagicSchool is now a cornerstone of Twin Rivers’ instructional technology toolkit, strengthening collaboration and ensuring compliance with California’s evolving AI guidance.
